A bench radiator is a practical way of providing heat, but whilst partially disguising the radiator by giving it the functionality of a small bench (i.e. you can sit on its top bench surface).
The bench radiator usually takes the form of a horizontal column style radiator onto which a seating platform has been mounted. The bench seat is usually made of wood as this is a poor conductor and prevents the actual seat from becoming too hot.
Bench radiators have a number of applications, particularly where heat is required but space is limited.
They work well in "under window" locations where they combine the traditional radiator location with the window seat.
They are perfectly suited to conservatories and small gyms and their mix of clever styling and functionality means that they look good with both modernist decor and more conservative interior design styles.
Other suitable locations for bench style radiators include halls and corridors where they can provide heat whilst offering basic seating. This makes them an option for many commercial and public sector buildings.
The only additional provision required for this kind of radiator is a load bearing base to take account of the fact that one or more people may be bearing their weight upon it. In most situations this should not present a problem.
Several manufacturers produce bench radiators and this means that they are available in a number of design variations and at competitive prices.
For most buyers the most relevant option is the finish material of the seat which typically comes in different polished wood finishes. However there are also some variations in seat height, length and even width (the horizontal depth of the seat).
Most bench radiators will plumb into a standard central heating system and they will either have their own thermostatic control or a thermostatic valve for precise heat management.
