A standard flat panel radiator looks exactly as its description would suggest.
It is square or rectangular in shape and its front "display" surface is smooth and flat. Budget flat panel designer radiators are usually white and they are also available as oil filled mains-eletric powered radiators.
As designer radiators go, standard flat panel units are very simple, but they are also elegant and they stand out because their surface and finish is unlike any other radiator design.
Simple flat panel radiators represent the essence of minimalism and, with a wall-to-radiator front face dimension of around 100mm, these radiators make very little distracting impact on rooms based on white walls and ceilings.
Although the most basic flat panel radiator has the appearance of a smooth flat panel of material, there are many variations and extensions to this design. These variations include the shape and front surface finish along with the use of different materials and varying colour schemes.
The most simple variation on the flat panel theme is to have vertical or horizontal ribbing on the face of the radiator. This gives the impression that the radiator is composed of several narrow panels that have been connected together. This kind of radiator can help emphasize vertical or horizontal lines within a room. It is a particularly effective look with flat panel column radiators where vertical emphasis is required.
Although all flat panel radiators fit into the designer radiator category, some do so in a more ostentatious way than others. Usually this is because of their shape, mounting or finishing material.
These radiators usually have two strong features. The first is an unusually high ratio between the height and width dimensions of the radiator which sees either, a tall and narrow panel, or a long and shallow one.
The second is the surface material and finish which can be cleverly used to dramatic effect. Examples of this included brushed metal finishes, matt black finishes and, most dramatic of all, a glass finish. These radiators act very much as features and focal points and need to be in a room where the other items of furniture are every bit as imposing and stylish.
At the top of the range, flat panel radiators may have curved edges to the radiators front surface and some radiators even have there own lighting effects for extra drama.
