The world of ultra modern radiator design sees anything and everything as being possible. These radiators are styled firstly as visual icons and secondly as heating units. The creative concept is one of coming up with a stylish design and then figuring out how to add function to form. It is this approach that is generating a revolution in the appearance of the 21st century radiator.
Some of these radiators are intended to look like radiators, but in a very futuristic or minimalist way. Other designs are intended to miss lead the viewer into thinking that they are a piece of abstract art, or a sculpture, with their actual function being disguised completely by their appearance.
Some Hi-Tec and ultra modern radiators use novel constructions that may include glass or new materials that act as radiating heat sinks. At the very top end of the price range there are radiators that can have features like illumination effects, incorporate a mirror within their design, or hang from a wall like a piece of art work. Some of these radiators are also powered by a mains electricity supply that makes their installation quick and simple.
These stylish modern and abstract radiators fall into the category of using either, a conventional central heating system (pumping hot water through pipes), or being an electrically powered stand alone heating unit.
The electrically powered radiators can be oil filled, or they can use another non-fluid method to generate and store heat.
The more abstract and un-radiator-like designs may be created for unusual mounting positions, for example, as centre pieces to an open wall, or in a position that would usually be occupied by a painting or wall hanging of some type.
Some radiators also see the doubling up of their function. This first started with heated radiator towel rails, but now sees radiators that enclose or include a mirror and radiators that can provide soft lighting, or LED effects for additional atmosphere.
Designs can be angular, based around distorted and rounded tubes, or have the appearance of large flat monolithic pieces of material with matt black or reflective metallic finished. Some designs also come in a range of bright or pastel colours and the surface of the radiator may have a textured finish.
The last few years have seen the blue print for what a radiator is supposed to look like torn up and thrown away.
At the present time, most of the more outlandish and abstract designer radiators have high price tags, but as awareness and a growth in the popularity of these designs increases, so their prices will drop. It is quite possible to imagine a world, in the not too distant future, where a typical radiator will be unrecognisable to most people’s conceptions of today.
